The Royal Canadian Legion organization for veterans emerged in 1925 with a branch in Haliburton Village. It fell on hard times for a while but came back strong. Plus, Charles Vance Millar and his peculiar will that led to a baby competition.
This week, Kate talks about Haliburton Village's Branch 129 of the Royal Canadian Legion that was originally chartered in 1928 following WW1. The Legions were organized by - and for - veterans of the war for mutual aid and to do community work. It languished for a few years between the wars, but came back stronger than ever due to the foresight of one man - Alfred Schofield. Plus, Paul talks about a practical joker Charles Vance Millar who is more famous for what he did after his death than for anything he did during his life. One of the clauses in his will bequeathed much of his estate to the Toronto woman who had the most babies born between his death and its tenth anniversary. The result was called the "Great Stork Derby".
